Where can you go for Breastfeeding and Lactation help in the ACT?
Well you can contact the Canberra Lactation Centre of course however we focus on Informing, Discovering and Empowering and part of Informing is to ensure that all options are shared and able to be utilised. So here goes....
Canberra Hospital has a lactation consultant available Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm. Referrals and consultations can be arranged through your midwife. Please note this is only open to women who have birthed at Canberra Hospital. This is a free service.
The ACT Region's Maternal and Child Health services has an Early Daysclinic which operates throughout Canberra on various days. It is free, however limited numbers are taken. Many MACH nurses are also an IBCLC and they are able to support you, please call Community Health Intake on (02) 6207 9977 between 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) have local groups with Breastfeeding Counsellors and Educators who can provide information, support and resources. Have a look at the local groups page for more information. ABA also have the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 1800686268, this is a 24/7 service and is staffed by trained volunteers.
NB: The Calvary Hospital Lactation Service that was operating out of the postnatal ward at Calvary Hospital in Belconnen is currently suspended due to the impending move to the new hospital. There are no firm plans to continue the service in the new space, however never say never.
